Aviation English Language Assessments

New to aviation? – Know Your English Level Before You Start Flight Training

Our Checkpoint Language Proficiency Assessment is a simple online test that quickly identifies your current English level. It allows us to prepare a personalised Training Needs Analysis highlighting any areas where you may need extra practice before beginning flight training.

Good English is important for flight training, especially at the beginner level as if your English isn’t strong enough, it can cause problems during training — for both you and your instructors. This can lead to delays, extra costs, or even training failure.
Taking this test early helps you prepare and avoid those issues.

Why not use ICAO Language Tests for student pilots?

ICAO language tests for personnel licensing are inappropriate for student pilots because:

  • They do not measure the skills that students need (for example, listening to flight instructors and reading training manuals)
  • They assume professional knowledge of aviation operations that students do not have.

Why not use general English Assessments?

General and academic English tests are also inappropriate for student selection because:

  • They do not address the context of aviation training so results are less valid
  • They test content and skills that are irrelevant to the needs of student pilots
  • They can be expensive, inflexible and time-consuming.
